Did you know that more than one-third of the US population is obese? We are living in a time where fast food restaurants are pretty much on every corner, making it more than convenient to indulge in a high calorie and low nutrient meal. I for one am guilty of picking up a burger with fries and even a soda when I am running short on time, or even if I don’t feel like cooking at home. This unhealthy lifestyle can sometimes lead to obesity, which can lead to diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease to name a few.

Now, how is this related to your dental health? These diseases not only affect the body but also your teeth! Creating a healthier lifestyle for you and your family can aid in the prevention of periodontal disease, gingivitis, tooth loss and tooth decay.

Here are a few tips to help support a healthy lifestyle:

•  Reduce or eliminate the “sugary drinks” and replace with good old water. Not only does it help keep your body hydrated, it doesn’t add unnecessary calories. It also doesn’t cause damage to your tooth enamel, like carbonated beverages can do.
• Choose an alternative snack such as nuts, raw veggies, or fruits rather than that candy bar at your desk or purse. If you are craving something sweet, go for “nature’s candy” and take a bite of a delicious apple. The saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” can also apply to the dentist!
•  Keep up with regular dental check ups! In between visits, don’t forget to maintain your oral hygiene on a daily basis. Brushing at least twice daily accompanied by regular flossing can help eliminate plaque and tartar.

Living a healthier lifestyle affects your overall health. If you feel good, you also look good. With proper dieting and exercise, not only does your body become healthier, so do your teeth!
